Explore the world of AI with Brand Media Networks expert AI coverage, Blogs, and hands-on experiences.

If you’ve searched “does ChatGPT have ads” or “how to advertise on ChatGPT,” you’re not alone, this has become one of the most-asked questions in marketing circles this year. The short answer: yes, ChatGPT now has ads, and the platform has moved fast since launch. Here’s the full picture.

Yes, ChatGPT Has Ads Now

OpenAI began showing ads inside ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, as a US pilot. Ads appear only to logged-in adult users on the Free and ChatGPT Go tiers if you’re on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education, your experience stays ad-free.

Unlike a banner bolted onto a webpage, these ads show up as clearly labeled, subtly tinted cards attached to the bottom of an AI response. They’re not woven into the answer itself  the model’s output stays separate from the sponsored content sitting beneath it.

How ChatGPT Decides Which Ad to Show You

This is the part advertisers and privacy-conscious users both want to understand. ChatGPT’s ad targeting relies on:

  • The topic of your current conversation
  • Your past chats and saved memory
  • Your previous interactions with ads

Notably, this isn’t the third-party cross-web tracking that powers most of today’s display advertising, and OpenAI has stated that advertisers never see the actual content of your chats — only the targeting signals derived from them.

From Invite-Only Pilot to Self-Serve Platform

The rollout has moved unusually fast for an ad platform:

  1. February 2026 — Invite-only pilot launches in the US, reportedly requiring six-figure minimum spend commitments from early advertisers.
  2. May 5, 2026 — OpenAI opens a self-serve Ads Manager, dropping the spend minimum entirely. Small and mid-sized businesses can now set up campaigns directly, running CPC or CPM bidding.
  3. Summer 2026 — Features expand quickly: conversion-optimized bidding (oCPC), custom audience uploads from email/phone lists, US state/DMA/ZIP-level targeting, and a tracking pixel (OAIQ) with a Conversions API for attribution.
  4. August 2026 — OpenAI announces expansion into 31 European markets, rolling out through agency and ad-tech partners first, alongside markets already live in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Big agency holding companies like Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, WPP and ad-tech players like Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt already support ChatGPT campaign management, signaling OpenAI expects most serious ad spend to flow through experienced partners rather than solo advertisers.

Should You Actually Advertise on ChatGPT Right Now?

Here’s where expectations need a reality check. Early field data from agencies running test campaigns has been modest, one reported test generated under a 1% click-through rate and no leads over several thousand impressions. The honest assessment circulating among performance marketers in mid-2026 is that ChatGPT’s buying and measurement tools have matured faster than the audience has grown, since ads still only reach free-tier users, not the professionals and power users on paid plans.

That said, this doesn’t mean the channel isn’t worth testing. It performs best when:

  • The user is already in a research or comparison mindset
  • Your offer can be expressed clearly in a single, focused ad card
  • You’re sending clicks to a landing page built specifically for that intent

It performs worst when your target buyer is likely on a paid ChatGPT plan, or when you need granular audience controls and mature attribution, areas where the platform is still catching up to search and social.

What Comes Next

OpenAI has strong financial incentive to keep expanding this fast — internal reporting has pointed to ambitious “free user monetization” revenue targets over the next few years, with advertising positioned as the primary lever alongside subscriptions and commerce features. Expect targeting depth, brand safety controls, and reporting to keep improving through the rest of 2026 and into 2027, along with continued geographic expansion beyond the current US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and newly announced European markets.

For now, ChatGPT Ads sits where most new ad platforms start: promising reach and a genuinely different targeting model, but still early enough that results should be judged with patience rather than benchmarked against a mature channel like Google Ads or Meta.
